A Gateway to the Fraser
Our goal is to create a place that connects you to the Fraser River,
to its history, its people and communities, its environments, its
industry: the living, working river. The Discovery Centre is a
gateway, an access point to the whole river, to the whole flow if
history, to the entire experience of the vast Fraser River basin,
with its many different landscapes, ecosystems, and rich diversity
of life.
A Fun place to visit
A big part of the experience will stress fun, excitement and wonder
- designed to squeeze the oohhs and ahhs from even the most jaded
youngster. (What does it feel like to shoot the rapids through Hells
Gate? Or to rock and roll in the boom boats of the Fraser?) And
we'll sneak some relevant messages in there during the fun.
A Resource Centre
People seeking to discover more about the rich stories of the Fraser
will find a storehouse of knowledge in the resource centre. It will
also act as a resource for the Fraser Basin as a whole: communities
and schools from all over the basin, will be able to 'visit' the
Centre via the Internet, and to have their stories told in the
Centre. And exhibits and shows would travel out to river
communities, keeping interest fresh and current.
A Meeting Place
We've got the fun, we've got the knowledge - now we need somewhere
for people to meet, discuss and exchange ideas about this amazing
river. A great deal of scientific study and environmental concern is
focused on the Fraser. Many are working hard to ensure its fish,
wildlife, habitats and beauty are maintained and conserved. The
Centre may also have a potential role as a focus and catalyst for
these activities.
